Navigating the world of professionalism in the age of COVID-19 is sometimes confusing. Though it would be ideal to meet with potential employers in person, the pandemic has changed the opportunities we are given. It’s important for everyone in search of a job to know how to present themselves and make a good impression at online events, such as a virtual hiring fair or interview. Here are some tips for nailing your next Zoom meeting.
- Dress for the part! Even though you may be participating from your bedroom, it’s important to show potential employers that you are a professional.
- Be sure that all technical issues are sorted out beforehand. Technology can sometimes be unpredictable, but make sure your device is charged, your WiFi connection is strong, and your video and audio work before logging into the meeting.
- Be there on time (or early). This shows potential employers that you are responsible and reliable. By signing on early, you give yourself time to relax and prepare, and shows that you’re excited about the opportunity.
- Ask questions. Though it is sometimes intimidating to unmute yourself in a group meeting full of awkward silence, talking directly to the host shows that you are interested, curious, and confident. If you are doing a virtual interview, research the company prior to the meeting and prepare questions.
