Sexual Assault Awareness Month was first officially observed in April 2001. Awareness for the campaign culminated in 2009 when Barack Obama officially proclaimed April as Sexual Assault Awareness Month.
The National Sexual Violence Resource Center (NSVRC) announced their 25th annual campaign, “25 Years Stronger: Looking Back, Moving Forward.”
In a press release, released April 1, 2026, Director of NSVRC, Jennifer Grove, was quoted as saying, “For 25 years, Sexual Assault Awareness Month has been a powerful opportunity for communities to come together, center survivors, and advance prevention efforts. This year’s campaign invites us to reflect on the strides we’ve made while also recognizing the work that remains ahead of us to build a culture rooted in respect, safety, and accountability.”
During April, the Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Center (WGSC) and other organizations promoted awareness and provided resources for sexual assault. Events such as PHI-ting Back, a self-defense class led by the Stockton Police and hosted by Omega Phi Beta, Alpha Phi Omega, Alpha Phi Delta, and many more Greek organizations; and the Sex and Candy Fair, an event focused on healthy sexual relationships, consent, and sexual wellness.
Pride Alliance hosted two meetings during April—one to bring education about sexual assault to the students, presented by an Avanzar representative, and one to have an open discussion about sexual assault and resources, featuring Boomer the therapy dog.
Even outside of April, if you need sexual assault resources or help, please reach out to the WGSC at wgsc@stockton.edu or call (609) 626-3611 or contact Avanzar, a 24-hour hotline, by calling 1-800-286-4181 or texting 609-569-5437.
