Stockton mourns the passing of Professor Anne Pomeroy

University President Dr. Harvey Kesslman said in a statement,

“Anne was an individual of immense integrity, kindness, and humility. I had the privilege of working closely with her during her tenure as President of the SFT. As much as I admire and respect all our SFT presidents, quite frankly Anne stands alone.”

Following the announcement of Pomeroy’s death, tributes for the Professor poured in. “I witnessed so much through this amazing Union President, colleague, and treasured friend and she will be forever in my heart. I will truly miss Anne – we all will, as she made our world a better place in so many brilliant ways.” said Physical Therapy Professor Marylou Galantino.

Dr. Patricia Reid-Merritt, a Professor of Social Work & Africana Studies said, “Anne was a loving, caring, committed sister warrior who supported me and so many others on and off campus. Her passing is a tremendous loss for all of us.”

Pomeroy was extremely involved in campus activities, serving as Union President from 2012–2017, she was described as “a fierce advocate for staff and faculty.” She was also a singer in the Stockton faculty band. Professor Frank Cerreto commented that one of his favorite memories was singing a duet with Pomeroy at Stockton’s holiday parties.

Elaine Ingulli, who was a dear friend of Anne, mentioned that Pomeroy did not believe we would “lose her” once she passed. Instead, Elaine said, “She was at peace, and she believed her energy would join with ours in the universe.”

Ratemyprofessor.com is a site that is widely used for students to voice their opinions about their professors and in some cases fiercely criticizes them; out of the 54 reviews given for Pomeroy, 53 were positive and praised her as a great Professor.  “Professor Pomeroy is one of the best teachers I’ve had at Stockton. She really cares about her students and helps whenever you are struggling. She even helped us with preceptor advice and showed us how to pick classes,” one student commented.

Another said, “Pomeroy is amazing! She is funny and does a great job explaining all of the readings. Her exams are fairly easy as long as you study (she puts notes for you on blackboard). I plan on taking more of her classes!”

The Stockton Federation of Teachers has set up a remembrance outside of the Union office in H230.  Members of the community are invited to share their stories of Pomeroy.  The union is planning to gather to honor her memory and celebrate her life later in the semester.
