SPACES holds multicultural welcome reception

On Tuesday, January 17, 2023, at 4:30 p.m., SPACES held a reception in the Campus Center Event Room to welcome students back on campus and create an avenue for students to connect with fellow students, faculty, staff, and campus organizations. The menu included several cultural dishes like empanadas, pernil, egg rolls, samosas, fried sweet plantains, tostones, wingding, and mac and cheese bites.

Assistant Director of the Office of Student Development, Dr. Shedia Laguer stated that over 300 people attended the event and that the variety of people who attended the event was a testament to the diversity of Stockton’s community. Other speakers at the event included Dr. Zupenda Davis-shine, Assistant Vice President for Student Health and Wellness; Mr. Elvis Gyan, Director of Center for Academic Advising; Joseph Thompson, Assistant Director of the Office of Student Development; Ms. Jovin Fernandez, Director of Multicultural Center; and Juan Chaparro, a Deeper Spaces attendee, among others.

Chaparro in his speech claimed that it is important for students to have a sense of belonging and it is great to see that Stockton provides an environment that fosters personal growth. The Director of the Multicultural Center stated that work is ongoing to get the Multicultural Center ready in time so that it can be utilized as a safe haven for members of the Stockton community.

A video featuring students from various student organizations who represent belonging was aired, along with a variety of games and prizes to be won at the welcome reception. Following the event, students were encouraged to share their feedback and for a chance of winning a SPACES t-shirt or a $25.00 Amazon Gift card. The link to the survey is embedded in a follow-up email that was sent out by Dr. Laguer.
