Student Development sends message on #StopAsianHate

Below is the recent message Student Development sent to student leaders on Friday, March 19 in the wake of Asian-targeted violence in Georgia.

Hello Student Leaders,

We wanted to reach out today to express our sadness regarding the recent targeted violence in Atlanta and extend support to our Asian, Asian American and Pacific Islander communities.  This is coming at a time of increased hate fueled incidents across our country toward the AAPI community (an estimated 3800 hate incidents in the past year) and fed by racist political talk at many levels.

Our community is strong, we recently stood up together in support of our BIPOC students and I know we will do the same for anyone who is threatened by violence and targeted by the white supremacy our country has imbedded since its founding.

Our AAPI community is also strong, we are proud of the many leaders and organizations that celebrate Asian American and Pacific Islander culture on campus.  Last year the first Stockton Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Celebration (AAPIH) continued throughout our campus closure with many great events, and we are excited to launch this year’s events as well, please check out all the events here.

My wish today is that all of us take some time to reflect how we can support each other though actions, by reaching out and learning more about our AAPI community.  There are many opportunities available on our AAPIH Celebration website, including links to the many clubs involved, university resources, and  national organizations such as Stop AAPI Hate.  Take a moment to follow the AAPIH Instagram account or any of the club accounts.  If you or your office/organization are interested in hosting an event for Stockton’s AAPIH Celebration, please express your interest using this form or contact Lauren.Wilson@stockton.edu for more information on how you can get involved.

If you are expiring bias on campus, please use the reporting tools on our Bias Prevention Education and Review team website.

Please feel free to reach out to any Student Development Staff member to talk about your next big idea or just to talk.

Stay Safe-

The Entire Student Development Family
