Smithville Village prepares for upcoming holiday season

Written for The Argo by Giavanna Giorgio

The Historic Smithville Village, just minutes from Stockton University’s campus, has been a popular hang-out spot for students throughout the years. It’s a perfect place to spend a day off with friends, roommates, or when family comes to visit! With over 60 shops and eateries, there’s plenty to explore in the village.

With the holidays fast approaching, the village will begin preparing for their annual Holiday Light Show on the lake. Starting from Thanksgiving until around January 3, this magical show consists of about 120 Christmas trees made from over 50,000 Christmas lights.

During the light show, guests enjoy the holiday music that floats throughout the village as well as a hot cup of hot chocolate from the Colonial Inn. The novelty and decorations of the village make you feel like you’re living in a Hallmark movie!

Although it was never actually a town, history lies all throughout the village with the old buildings that long ago held a different purpose: family homes, barber shops, or school houses. Currently turned into shops, these restored and preserved buildings bring character and charm to the village.

Smithville prides themselves on having a place for everyone in the family! A Sports Fan Cave for the men, fashion and jewelry stores for the women, a Toy Market for the kids. Not to mention attractions such as the train and carousel! Historic Smithville Village opens their cobblestone walkways to the public year round.

Student Sophia Reitzler enjoys regular walks around the village. “My family and I love going to Smithville. It’s one of our favorite ways to spend a family day. It’s just nice to walk around and see all the unique items that every store has,” Reitzler said.
