Q&A of the week— career corner

Q: What value do my talents have when it comes to career choice?

A: Your talent is a natural aptitude or ability that can be developed over time. The value of talents in career determination can never be underestimated. Everyone has a unique talent that stands them out from others. It could be the ability to multitask or learn faster than others. Whatever it may be, it may prove beneficial to utilize it to accelerate your career.

While talent is very important, it is also important to note that talent must be developed with time for one to become better. In the words of John C. Maxwell, “talent is never enough.” There are a lot of other factors that must come into play for your talent to take you to where you want to get to.

These factors help you fine-tune what you already have inside of you. They make you stand out more. One such factor is education. It is possible to have the best talent, but education helps you enhance and shape it.

Also, your attitude is fundamental. No matter how talented you are, if you have a bad attitude, you will find it very hard to secure career opportunities. Humility may be helpful. There is value in one who can bring their ideas to the table and showcase their talents without becoming proud or arrogant.

Finally, consider your value system. What values do you hold dear to you? Are you a person who upholds integrity, confidentiality, and professionalism? These are things that make people get more interested in you beyond what you have to offer based on your abilities.
