On Thursday, Feb. 9, after a myriad of posts on Instagram eliminating potential Woodstockton 2023 musical guests one by one, SET announced that the final choice was Yung Gravy, who was selected as the winner after it was down to a number of 5 potential performers on the elimination board.
Reactions to the announcement were mixed in person and on social media. Positive reactions consisted of cheering when the banner was draped over the upper Campus Center railing. Negative reactions were taken on Instagram with many users commenting “Keep ya ticket,” “Biggest L of stockton,” and “now who the hell was in charge of this decision.” The backlash on Instagram went as far as the creation of an account titled @no.yunggravy.at.stockton. There were a handful of positive comments on SET’s announcement post as well, which included statements like “this is gonna be a good one!!” and “…everyone’s pissed I’m over here celebrating.” The post and its comment section can be accessed here.
Yung Gravy has had a rapping career since 2017; he has earned 2 RIAA Platinum records and 6 RIAA Golden records. He has completed ten international tours and has released one mixtape, four albums, and seven EPs. Gravy is often associated with the SoundCloud rapper era and fellow artists such as Chief Keef and bbno$.
Yung Gravy’s musical style is a blend of modern trap music with vintage soul influence. His fans consider his style to be amusing, energetic, bold, and authentic. Yung Gravy himself has cited multiple musicians from different genres as inspirations for his music, ranging from hip-hop to soul acts.
Yung Gravy will be performing at Big Blue Sports Center at 8 p.m. on April 3, 2023. Doors open at 7 p.m. Tickets are on sale at the Campus Center Information desk at $15 for current students, $25 for Faculty, Staff, and Stockton Alumni, and $30 for General Admission.
