After making it to the World Series in 2008, the Philadelphia Phillies have returned once again, battling it out with the Houston Astros for the 2022 World Series title. The Philadelphia team has made seven appearances in the World Series and has since won twice; once in 1980 and again in 2008. With their competitors coming back stronger, Phillies fans around the region wonder: can they do it again?
In the Atlantic City lounge at Stockton University’s Atlantic City Campus, Stockton hosted its watch party for every game happening throughout the week, at which Stockton students could come out to watch history in the making.
Jennifer Malti, a New York Mets fan, has expressed her support for the Philly team despite her team falling short of the playoffs. “I am a very big fan of underdog teams, and I dislike the Houston Astros,” said Malti. She described the Phillies as a “very dominant team… especially [since] they were the sixth seed… nobody thought they would get that far. They pretty much showed their worth that they deserve to be here, they are just having a heck of a season.”
So what has changed for these underdogs? Malti claims that “They have a lot of big bats that can produce for them, their pitching staff is immaculate, and their coaching staff is a lot better.”
Another Stockton student, who has been routing for the Phillies since the beginning, excitedly mentioned the team was “finally here,” and mentions how the Philadelphia Eagles are currently having a perfect season as well. With their undefeated record of 7-0 along with being the only undefeated team in the NFL, Philly fans have been cheering with excitement.
The two professional teams played on the same day against teams from Houston on Thursday, November 3rd. This week held a lot of excitement, and fans can only hope that there will soon be two parades in the “City of Brotherly Love.”
