Table tennis back on the ball

Written for The Argo by Olivia Collucci

Stockton University’s Table Tennis Club is making big moves this semester in hopes of bringing the organization back to its former glory with better equipment and new members. Their goal is to ensure the longevity of the club for the next generation of table tennis enthusiasts at the university.

As Victor Ramirez, co-president of the club states, “We definitely need someone to take over after we graduate. All the work that we put in, we can essentially just give that information to someone and it’ll make it really easy to continue.”

After getting hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic, the Table Tennis Club found itself with only a handful of members and is hoping to bounce back by hosting a set of tournaments on campus. With one tournament already done and two still left to go, members seem hopeful that the club will gain more attention and are already preparing to pass the torch.

Victor, who currently runs the club with co-president Usman Rajput, explained that the pandemic made the already-dwindling club almost entirely defunct in the 2020-2021 academic year. Fortunately, with a little perseverance, they were able to acquire some much needed ping pong tables for the I-Wing this semester, valued at $5000- $4200 above their previous budget.

“We don’t want our efforts to go to waste like in previous years, where there was a club but then that just fizzled out,” Victor said. He indicated that he wants to preserve the spirit of the club, which is all about friendly competition, self improvement, and just having a good time. “I’d say the most important thing is just having fun.”

In addition to equipment and hopefully new members, the Table Tennis Club is looking at the possibility of becoming a competitive college team, and has already put in an order for official

jerseys. The possibility might help take the club to the next level, but for now, the focus is on garnering support for the club and their future ventures.

The Table Tennis Club is hosting their next tournament on March 18 at 6 p.m. in Stockton University’s Campus Center game room. For more information or to join the Table Tennis Club contact stocktonuniversitypingpong@gmail.com
