Fraternity and Sorority Life holds semestral Meet the Greeks for the Spring

Students who have earned 12 or more credits are now eligible to join a Greek-letter organization on Stockton’s campus. On January 21, Meet the Greeks provided those students with the opportunity to meet the four councils and 29 active chapters in Stockton’s Fraternity and Sorority Life. In the Event Room, all chapters gathered to offer information on membership, philanthropy, recruitment, values, events, and all of the other aspects that Greek Life has to offer. Some of the many benefits of joining include service hours, philanthropic opportunities, leadership opportunities, resume-building, strong social connections, and alumni networking.

Including the 12+ credit requirement, potential new members must also have a minimum GPA of 2.0, and good academic standing with the University (some individual chapters may have separate requirements). Two organizations under the Professional Fraternity Council are open to current members of Greek Life as well as potential new members: Alpha Phi Omega (service) and Delta Epsilon Mu (pre-health). Many chapters showed off certificates from the Order of Omega honor society, a group of leaders that have impacted the FSL community.

Stockton’s College Panhellenic chapters will be holding their Formal Recruitment process from January 30 to February 2. Sabrina LeFurge, President of the Delta Pi chapter of Sigma Delta Tau, stated: “Meet the Greeks is a [great] event for PNMs to meet all the sororities and really get to know us before Formal Recruitment. I was very hesitant [to enter] Formal Recruitment as a Chemistry major, but going out for recruitment was the best decision I ever made, and I love my chapter and Greek Life.” If eligible and interested, visit this link.

William Heller, a member of the Kappa Sigma fraternity—the chapter that the Fraternity and Sorority Life director, Mat Greer, was initiated into—said: “Meet the Greeks definitely benefits people who have challenges getting out and being social. [You can] come out and meet a great group of people, find where you think you belong, and see where Greek Life takes you. It’s definitely helped a lot of people I know, including myself.” Heller’s main advice for potential new members looking to join Greek Life was: “Be yourself and have fun!”

The evening closed out with the iconic dances, steps, and strolls from the National Pan-Hellenic Council chapters (NPHC) or Divine Nine, and the Unified Cultural Greek Council chapters (UCGC). The performances brought members and PNMs alike to the circle, cheering on the dancers and proudly showing their organizations’ hand symbols. The performances brought an end to the Meet the Greeks events by introducing potential new members to the fun, proud, and welcoming culture that Stockton’s Greek Life has to offer.

Kamelea Saitova, a potential new member in her sophomore year, said: “I loved talking to [everyone]! I enjoyed my time here. I’m not too social of a person, and this was a great way to network, connect, and socialize. People are dancing, getting to know each other, and you can be yourself and feel free to relax. You’ll find someone here, even if you don’t join [Greek Life]!” Saitova is heavily considering joining Fraternity and Sorority Life after her positive experience.
