32nd Annual Winter Poetry and Prose Getaway

Murphy Writing of Stockton University held its 32nd Annual Winter Poetry and Prose Getaway from January 16-19. The getaway had writers from 16 states under one roof at the Seaview Hotel in Galloway, NJ. Founded by Peter E. Murphy in 1994, the Winter Getaway has been welcoming new and returning writers every year.

This writing getaway exists for writers to have the opportunity to grow their craft with meaningful workshops- which include poetry, fiction, nonfiction, memoir, songwriting, and storytelling. Writers are even encouraged to add on services that assist with one-on-one tutorials.

The getaway consists of many entertaining opportunities throughout the weekend. This includes a story slam with prizes for the top three winners, karaoke, and a disco night with Emily Dickinson and Edgar Allen Poe. The getaway also motivates music artists, as an evening program allows them to share their talent with attendees.

Writers who have published pieces can sell their work at the makeshift bookstore. The opportunity allows writers to share their work with fellow writers and book lovers. Attendees are also encouraged to bring in books that they have already read and exchange them for a new one at the book table, to be introduced to a new set of material.

The weekend ended with a heartfelt speech from Peter Murphy, and as the last day of the getaway lands on January 16 each year, an homage is paid to Martin Luther King Jr. This year’s getaway ended with a beautiful dance to pay respects to the work of Dr. King Jr.

It was my first time attending, and I was fearful of not knowing anyone there. With around 200 attendees, I was worried about not fitting in, but this getaway was unlike any other that I have been to. I was able to sit with new writers at every meal and exchange ideas, perspectives, and experiences.

As a student of both Psychology and Literature, I was able to connect both degrees to speak on topics that matter most to me. I had the opportunity to share about my upcoming novel and connect with a new audience that was more than accepting. The specific workshop that I had the pleasure of attending was Staying in the Now: A Novel Writing Workshop. With an already strong foundation in my craft, the engaging workshops encouraged me to approach my writing from a new outlook. I was able to learn new levels of writing and create personal bonds, refining my voice and deepening how I approach storytelling.
