How one local woman’s dream opened Galloway’s first Hispanic market

GALLOWAY, N.J. — Nestled in a tiny corner store on Jimmie Leeds Road lies the heart of Latino goods and culture. La Esquinita Mini Market, located at 80 W. Jimmie Leeds Road, is Galloway’s first Hispanic store. The small but mighty market was founded and is operated by one woman, Luisa Gonzalez, a Galloway resident originally from Peru.

La Esquinita opened on Nov. 12, 2025, and has already received overwhelming support from the community. Latino residents expressed their relief to finally have a store that sells products that remind them of home. Gonzalez saw the lack of options and representation in the Galloway area and decided it was time to single-handedly change the narrative, despite not knowing anyone who could help her get started.

“I wanted to open a store where customers can find Hispanic products and goods. Galloway did not have that,” Gonzalez said.

The mini market not only sells packaged goods and spices but also fresh produce and meat, bakery treats and frozen foods. Products at La Esquinita come from countries across Latin America, including Mexico, Ecuador and Peru. Customers can also find toiletry supplies and household goods, in addition to a small selection of piñatas and Hispanic candy.

One Galloway resident expressed their relief about the store’s proximity, commenting on the store’s Facebook post, “Great! I don’t have to drive to Pleasantville. Gracias y muchos éxitos en tu negocio.”

Looking ahead, Gonzalez hopes to see the market thrive and grow. As a small business owner, she hopes to expand her team and product variety. Gonzalez also plans to incorporate weekly sales and promotions to keep prices affordable for customers. Her dream is to see the market bustling, with shelves stacked with unique flavors from home. Stockton students are encouraged to visit the store and help promote the opening of the new mini market within the community.

La Esquinita is open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. every day of the week. Customers are encouraged to follow the market on Facebook and Instagram at @LaEsquinitaMiniMarket.
