On Wednesday, April 16, a group of Communication Studies students from Stockton University joined fellow sports enthusiasts at Citizens Bank Park for an inspiring “Women in Sports” night, hosted by Temple University’s School of Business in partnership with the Philadelphia Phillies. The evening celebrated the impact of women across the sports industry and gave students a unique opportunity to connect with leaders shaping the future of the game.
Held in the stadium’s media room, the panel featured standout professionals including Monica Clark (Coordinator, Youth Baseball & Softball Development), Jackie Cuddeback (Chief Revenue Officer), Corinne Landrey (Director, Baseball Operations), and Lisa Knechtel (Director, Human Resources) from the Phillies. They were joined by NBC Sports Philadelphia reporter Taryn Hatcher and trailblazing journalist Claire Smith, Co-Director of the Claire Smith Center for Sports Media. Knechtel also served as moderator for the evening.

Panelists shared personal stories, professional insights, and candid reflections on breaking barriers in a male-dominated industry. One of the night’s most powerful moments came during the Q&A session when Stockton student Danna Urias asked about handling judgment in the sports media world. The panelists, including Hatcher, responded with heartfelt honesty about self-doubt, perfectionism, and staying confident in your voice.
Attendees also had the chance to meet Phillies alumni Mickey Morandini, Milt Thompson, and Dickie Noles—champions from the 1980, 1993, and 2008 teams.
“It was such a great experience,” said Stockton student Riley Lorenz. “I had a lot of fun and definitely learned a lot from hearing these amazing women speak. Go Phils!”
Events like “Women in Sports” night not only highlight the progress being made in the industry, but also emphasize the importance of visibility, mentorship, and community. For the Stockton students in attendance, it was more than just a panel—it was a glimpse into what’s possible. With continued support from institutions like Temple University and teams like the Phillies, the future for women in sports media and leadership looks brighter than ever.
