SIBS Sunday brings the community food, fun activities, and chances to receive free Stockton merchandise

SIBS Sunday was hosted on April 6 by The Office of Residential Life in partnership with multiple campus partners to bring a lineup of engaging events to the Stockton community. Families, friends, and students were invited to attend from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. A walk down the halls of Stockton’s Main Campus Center showed families checking into the event, getting food at the buffet located in the Coffee House, and participating in the many activities offered near the meeting rooms. Even outside, families were seen playing pickleball while it was nice out.

After check-in, attendees were eligible to receive one free item of Stockton apparel while supplies lasted. There was a variety of clothing available from joggers, long sleeve t-shirts, t-shirts, and even jackets. There was a lunch buffet that started at 11 a.m. and afterward, those that received one of the 100 free vouchers for ice cream at check-in were able to go to the ice cream truck located outside of the Coffee House.

The events were scattered throughout Galloway Campus, from the Campus Center to the Coffee House to the courtyard by the Multicultural Center. However, with the lack of activities offered on other parts of campus, a Stockton Junior, Esmeralda Rivera, stated, “I’m disappointed that I couldn’t attend SIBS Sunday. With my recent leg injury, the lack of weekend shuttles, and the rainy weather, I missed out on something really fun and engaging for students. If there were any events held here at the Lodge or in the courts, I probably would have come out to participate. We can’t enjoy weekend events when they’re across the lake and the only way to get there is walking.”

Over the course of the last couple of days, the events listed in OspreyHub kept changing, as the weather had an inconsistent forecast approaching Sunday. With this, more of the activities were moved inside due to the potential rain in the afternoon. Not only was the forecasted rain a deterring aspect, but the lack of advertisement for some of the students was a reason that they did not attend.

A Senior who wishes to remain anonymous was interviewed about the reasoning behind going home for the weekend versus staying on campus, “I did not know about the event till last minute. Just an email is not enough to advertise a Stockton Event, there needs to be more social media posts, RA involvement, […] to promote events held on campus. Some of our college schedules are very planned out when adding in sports, hobbies, or academic requirements, and last minute notice about the events being held can make it hard to schedule in fun activities like SIBS Sunday.”

On the other hand, a student on the social media platform Yik Yak stated that there were tons of emails sent out as reminders but they still did not attend.

Still, those who attended could walk around and find themselves in the Coffee House at a picnic buffet with foods like hamburgers, hot dogs, potato salad, or playing games at the varying partner tabling activities. Pickleball, board games, and arts and crafts were also popular choices amongst attendees.
