Stockton University celebrates National Girls and Women in Sports Day

Stockton University proudly joined the nationwide celebration of National Girls and Women in Sports Day (NGWSD) this week, recognizing the impact of female athletes both on and off the field. The event honored the achievements of women in sports and highlighted the next generation of female athletes who continue to push boundaries.

To mark the occasion, Stockton’s women’s spring sports teams—softball, lacrosse, and track & field—reflected on the female sports figures who have inspired them. From professional icons to personal mentors, these role models have shaped their journeys in athletics.

Softball players praised Sis Bates, the former University of Washington star known for her defensive prowess and leadership. “I idolize her hard work ethic and the way she plays,” basketball player, Evangelina Kim, noted.

For gymnasts and aspiring athletes across all sports, Simone Biles continues to be an inspiration. “She shows us how to be a strong and independent woman in sports within America,” said the women’s lacrosse team.

Others looked closer to home for motivation, citing older sisters, coaches, and teammates who paved the way for their success. “My older sister inspired me to play softball,” said Maggie Formichelli of Stockton softball.

Stockton’s commitment to supporting female athletes extends beyond just one day of celebration. With competitive teams, strong mentorship, and a culture of empowerment, the university continues to foster an environment where women in sports can thrive.

As NGWSD serves as a reminder of the progress made and the work still to be done, Stockton’s women athletes remain determined to inspire the next generation—just as their own role models have inspired them.
