January 27 was International Holocaust Remembrance Day, and the Sara and Sam Schoffer Holocaust Resource Center of Stockton University helped honor victims of the genocide with the help of the Casino Association of New Jersey. Symbolizing the Star of David badge Jewish folks were forced to wear by the Nazi party, seven casinos in Atlantic City — Bally’s Atlantic City, Caesars Atlantic City, Golden Nugget Atlantic City, Hard Rock Hotel and Casino Atlantic City, Resorts Atlantic City, Ocean Casino Resort and Tropicana Atlantic City — lit their outside facades yellow at dusk.

This was done through a nationwide Holocaust awareness campaign, one of which the New Jersey Commission on Holocaust Education is a part of. Atlantic City was among many to join the initiative, as New York City’s Empire State Building turned yellow alongside Niagara Falls and the Philadelphia International Airport.

Director of Stockton’s Holocaust Resource Center and member of the New Jersey Commission, Irvin Moreno-Rodriquez, first gave to the idea to Mark Giannantonio, the president and CEO of Resorts and the president of the casino association. He said in a statement made to Stockton’s News and Media Relations that “by joining this campaign, Atlantic City casinos are physically reminding all of us of the importance of Holocaust education and the Center’s mission to commemorate the Holocaust and combat antisemitism and other forms of hate.”

The campaign also commemorated the 80th anniversary of Auschwitz’s liberation, the concentration camp that took the lives of 1.1 million people during the Holocaust.
