Winter Sports Recap: Men’s and women’s basketball victories and Kayla Kass’ new school record

Stockton University’s athletics program continued to excel during the winter break, with impressive performances across men’s and women’s basketball and track and field. The Ospreys demonstrated their strength and determination, setting records and achieving career milestones.

The men’s basketball team now holds a 12-5 overall record, with three of those victories achieved during the break. Notable games included a commanding 96-85 win against Gettysburg College and an 88-59 triumph over Rutgers-Camden University, where Andrew Crawford scored a career high of 12 points. Jamar Johnson delivered a standout performance against Montclair State, achieving a career-best seven assists. In a highly anticipated rivalry matchup against Rowan University, Stockton fought hard but fell short in a dramatic 100-106 loss. Despite the outcome, EJ Matthews-Spratley led the team with 20 points, while Jahmir Payoute reached a career high of 17 points.

The women’s basketball team also displayed resilience and skill. They secured a dominant 86-40 victory over York College, with Skylar Fowlkes achieving her first double-double by scoring a career high of 18 points and collecting 16 rebounds. She later surpassed this with 24 points in a subsequent game. First-years Evangelina Kim and BrookeLyn Graham reached career highs with nine points each, while ChiChi Wokocha recorded her first career double-double with 14 points and 14 rebounds. In a 66-56 win against Rutgers-Camden, Grace Speer led the offense with a career-high 22 points. Although the team faced losses to Montclair State (67-54) and Rowan University (60-55), individual efforts stood out, with Speer achieving her second double-double and Kim extending her career high to 10 points.

Stockton’s track and field athletes made their mark at the Gotham Cup with record-breaking performances and strong individual results. Carson Latham set a new school record in the 200m with a time of 22.21 seconds, currently ranking ninth in NCAA Division III. Ahmad Fogg excelled in the long jump with a leap of 7.03m, placing third overall and 17th nationally among Division III athletes. Andres Perez tied for sixth in the pole vault, while Timothy Lanblues finished eighth in the triple jump. The 4×400 relay team also performed admirably, finishing 11th out of 22 teams.

On the women’s side, Kayla Kass broke the school record in the 500m with a time of 1:17.99, earning second place. Eva Morrison impressed in the pole vault, finishing as the runner-up and leading all Division III competitors. Elaina Styer placed third in the high jump and achieved a top-20 finish in the 60m hurdles. Freshmen Sydney Ricks and Marlie DiPalma contributed strong performances in the pole vault and long jump, while Isabella Freda and Amanda McNally delivered solid results in the weight throw and 1000m, respectively.

Stockton Athletics showcased outstanding talent and determination during the winter break, setting new records and achieving personal milestones across all teams. The Ospreys continue to make their mark and inspire pride within the Stockton community.
