Abilities Awareness Day at Stockton University educates students on campus resources

From 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Wednesday, December 4, peer educators from Stockton’s Wellness Center hosted a day of abilities awareness. The purpose of the event was to educate students on the range of disabilities and how they impact individuals lives, as well as the many different resources campus offers to accommodate all abilities. The various educators, who are students that lead as role models on these topics of health, shared statistics on mental and physical needs as well as who and where students can go for these different needs. One peer educator stated, “The wellness center has student resources such as the Learning Access Program and accommodations.”

The LAP office is located in J-204, and provides equal access and interactive disability services. Additionally, the Stockton Cares office in F-107 exists for anyone dealing with wellness emergencies and those in need of access to other services. Inclusivity is one of Stockton’s priorities, which aims to guarantee that there is a place for all students on campus and to have an education that welcomes everyone regardless of their needs. Abilities Awareness Day was an educational opportunity that also shared free resources within the school and outside it, such as the American Foundation for suicide prevention. There were fun opportunities of learning such as spinning a wheel to answer a question about different disabilities and multiple activities to hear about stories to have a conversation about accessibility.

The Wellness Center is open to all Stockton students looking for the counseling center, health services, disability services, education on alcohol and drugs, and much more. They are located in the west quad on Galloway campus and can be contacted by phone at (609) 652-4701.
