Local band Moonroof plays at SET’s Music Night

The Philadelphia-based band, Moonroof, performed at Stockton’s Campus Center Coffee House at on Thursday, November 22 as part of the Stockton Entertainment Team’s Music Night. Moonroof is comprised of four musicians: Dave Kim on vocals, Dan Rendine on drums, Kevin Randolph on bass, and Johnny Fordyce on guitar. Their music is mainly described as upbeat Indie-pop.

They performed some of their original songs, including “Bad for Me,” “Maybe Crazy,” “Honey,” and “Vanilla.” “Maybe Crazy” is lead singer, Dave Kim’s, personal favorite song of the group, and along with performing some of their originals, Moonroof also played some covers. This set included songs such as “Maps” by Yeah Yeah Yeahs, “Stacy’s Mom” by Fountains of Wayne, “I Want it That Way” by the Backstreet Boys, and “Mr. Brightside” by The Killers to name a few.

Moonroof signed with Free Dive Records in October 2020, and in October 2021 they released their EP, “Dream State,” which debuted as the #2 Alternative Album behind Coldplay and #6 overall on Apple iTunes top 200.

The Argo was fortunate enough to speak with the band before their set, and the band talked about their beginnings at Bloomsburg University, the school where Kim, Rendine, and Randolph all met. When asked how Moonroof was formed, Kim said, “I never thought I would be in a band,” since he did not play any instruments growing up, in comparison to Rendine and Randolph, who were both in bands in high school. When Rendine got to college he mentioned that he “heard Dave singing in the shower,” as his room was directly next to the bathrooms, and thought “All right, this guy can sing.” Rendine was already looking to make a band when he got to college and met new people while furthering his musical passions, and now a few years later, Moonroof is working on their first full-length album set to release in Spring of 2025, and a second tour across the United States this spring and summer.

In July of last year, there was an addition to the band with guitarist Fordyce joining Moonroof officially and accompanying them on their tour out West in 2023. This tour expanded their reach playing at different venues and festivals across the United States. The experience was surreal as described by Rendine, who mentioned that “The shows weren’t big, it was more about meeting new people and bands,” some of which already knew who Moonroof was before they got there. Kim explained that for some, “Moonroof was their first live show.” To arrive at a new venue in a new city where none of band has been to before, and to then have people go up to them saying they love their music was “an incredible and humbling feeling,” according to Kim.

Moonroof’s next performance is at Bryn Mawr College on December 7. Their most recent release, “Talk To You,” is available to listen on all streaming platforms.
