The annual Light Up Lake Fred event, held by the Kappa Sigma fraternity and Delta Phi Epsilon sorority at Stockton University, took place on Thursday, October 24, 2024. Lanterns filled the lake outside of the Lakeside Lodge to honor late Stockton alumnus, Steven Hensle.

Members of Kappa Sigma, Delta Phi Epsilon, and other community members gathered at the Lakeside Lodge to purchase their lanterns and send them off into the lake, creating a sparkling view. Participants wrote the names of their loved ones who have recently passed or have passed from cancer as a way to honor them during the event.

During his time at Stockton, Hensle was a member of the Xi Rho chapter of Kappa Sigma and was an active member of his community, working as a TALON on campus. Hensle also served as Vice President of Recruitment for his fraternity chapter.

Hensle passed away in 2017 after battling brain cancer, and his legacy is commemorated each year by the Kappa Sigma brothers with the lantern lighting event. The proceeds from the event will be donated to the Ulman Foundation, a non-profit organization that works to fight against young-adult cancer.

“We just like to keep honoring his name in our fraternity and his legacy and everything he’s done for the chapter,” said Joshua Pingol, a member of Kappa Sigma at Stockton. “We just keep doing it; Keep doing good by him.”
