Career Question for the Week

Q: How does a professional define career success?

A: Career success is subjective and varies from one professional to another. While some define career success by the amount of salary earned or corporate position, others may look at work-life balance, job satisfaction, or better, ability to make an impact. Generally, career success is a reflection of a professional’s goals and circumstances over the span of a professional journey.

It doesn’t come as a surprise that financial stability is a fundamental indicator of career success for most individuals. High salaries, wages, compensation, bonuses and overall financial stability undoubtedly validates the level of dedication, diligence and dexterity that one has invested into growing their career. Financial achievement is significant because like Quentin Bufogle said, money solves 99% of all problems. The ability to provide for ones needs and wants easily is satisfying and affords one the opportunity to make choices easily.

Also, passion and fulfillment is another way to define career success. The Pew Research Center conducted a research that placed about 51% of workers aged 30 to 49 as extremely or very satisfied with their job. When people are engaged in a career that aligns with their personal interests, it can be a fulfilling experience for them. This increases motivation, productivity, initiative and gives them a sense of belonging.

In addition to that, a good work-life balance is another metric that can be used in defining career success. Due to the fast-paced nature of most industries, work-life balance can be almost impossible to achieve. Consequently, when professionals are able to enjoy things like vacation, sick time, paid time off, and even remote work; it can be considered career success. This is important because individuals would be able to pursue other interests, enjoy family time and even check physical and mental health; important parameters to be a productive professional.

Moreover, personal growth and opportunities for continuous learning does it for some. As the saying goes, the only room that can never be filled up is the room for improvement. Thus, most professionals measure career success by how they are able to grow professionally especially when such opportunities are created for them by their employers. Access to professional trainings, conferences, symposiums, workshops and more are important opportunities for networking and getting information that helps an individual grow professionally.

Finally, most professionals would measure their career success by their level of impact and contribution to society, which is very noble. Making a difference in the lives of others is a humbling yet fulfilling experience. For some professionals, it reminds them that they are still human and as such have a duty of service to humanity. So, whenever they get an opportunity to add value, it is a wholesome experience that connotes a successful career.

Career success can be measured using different parameters. However, the fact remains that it is personal and differs from person to person. The end goal for every professional should be to have a satisfying and enjoyable professional experience that outlives them and can be a template for new professionals.
