Greek Organizations hold annual HERO Games for Greek Week

Stockton’s Greek life has reached the third day of Greek Week this year. On Monday, April 1, lucky Greek-affiliated students were able to attend the Phillies game in Philadelphia. On Tuesday, organizations collected cans to build “Can Castles” in the Lodge. On Preceptor Day, everyone gathered in the I-Wing Gym to participate in a series of field day games to earn points. Fraternities and sororities gathered into their teams and cheered each other on in each of the fun games planned by the Greek Council and hosted by Mat Greer, Stockton’s Fraternity and Sorority Life Advisor, who is an alum of Kappa Sigma.

Members played games such as Egg Toss, Tug of War, a Three-Legged Race, a Wheelbarrow Race, and other fun games. One of the most exciting parts was the Tug of War competition, which featured periods of loud cheering and encouragement from teams as they stood around their participating teammates, who put all their strength and will into tugging the rope.

Bill Elliot, father of John R. Elliot and founder of the HERO Campaign, congratulated the Greek organizations and expressed his appreciation for their support against drunk driving. He commented that “Stockton is our base of operations for the whole country.” He encouraged the members, saying, “We want you proud, keeping us going, keeping the message going, and keeping everyone safe.”

Sigma Alpha Epsilon and Zeta Tau Alpha took home the first-place trophy while Tri Sigma, Sigma Pi, and Alpha Phi Delta earned the second-place trophy. Pre-Health Fraternity, Delta Epsilon Mu, partnered with Delta Zeta and Phi Mu Delta, took the third place prize. The competition continued on Thursday with a Dodgeball Tournament, and finally Friday, where members showed off their awesome dance moves at the Greek Week Showcase, as an annual tradition.

Mat Greer commented, “This year’s turnout for the HERO Games during Greek Week was outstanding. With over 225 enthusiastic participants, the atmosphere was energetic. The games, including Tug of War, Relay Races, Kan Jam, Egg Toss, and Football Throw, brought together members of the Fraternity and Sorority Life community in a spirit of friendly competition and camaraderie.”

Greer is proud of how the HERO Games and Greek Week has a whole align with the John R. Elliot HERO Campaign for Designated Drivers. “By organizing events like the HERO Games, we not only raise awareness of the campaign’s mission, but also actively engage our community in the pursuit of this crucial goal”, the goal being to reduce drunk driving tragedies.

“Through initiatives like the HERO Games, we aim to underscore the importance of responsible decision-making, particularly regarding alcohol consumption. By fostering a culture where having a designated driver is as automatic as wearing a seatbelt, we contribute to creating safer roads and communities.” Greer said.
