The United Black Student Society (UBSS) at Stockton University hosted a vibrant event tagged “Meet Black Stockton” on Thursday, February 1, 2024, as part of the events to celebrate the Black History Month. The event, which took place in the C/D Atrium, drew a diverse crowd of students, faculty, and management members who were eager to meet some of the black student organizations, fraternities and sororities and black-owned businesses.
“This event is about more than just bringing people to hang out; it’s about recognizing and celebrating the contributions that black individuals and communities have made to our university,” said Vanessa Bawuah, president of UBSS. “We want to create a safe space where people can come together to learn, share experiences, and build connections.”
Imani Bennett of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Pi Chi chapter said that “the AKA is the first black Greek letter sorority and its mission is sisterhood, scholarship & service to all mankind.” President of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Incorporated Phi Mu Chapter, Camryn Murray described her sorority as “a non-profit organization with principles of scholarship, service, sisterhood and finer womanhood.” A representative of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Incorporated said that his fraternity is committed to manly deeds, scholarship and love for all mankind.
A business owner, Dahlia Brown who runs a lash tech business that offers different services like classic, hybrid, volume, mega volume, etc. tabled at the event. Her Instagram for her business is @prettyeyesbyd. Another business, LaidbyT.o braiders who are into locs, braids and twists encouraged people to utilize their business.
The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, Caribbean Student Association, and African Student Organization also tabled at the event. NAACP representatives speaking to the Argo shared that the organization is committed to civil rights and social justice advocacy for colored people. The CSA on the other hand is the association of Caribbean students on campus and the ASO is the organization for African students that is committed to promoting African culture.
There were some dance performances towards the end of the event from the fraternities and sororities and Executive Vice President, Dr. Terricita Sass and Vice President for Student Affairs, Dr. Chris Catching were also present at the event.
