On November 10, 2023, Stockton held opening remarks in the Grand Hall in honor of Veterans Day. The service began with an introduction from Ashley Jones, the Assistant Director of the Military and Veteran Success Center and the daughter of a military father. After reciting the pledge of allegiance, Stockton University’s Lynda Larkin sang the National Anthem. Following this introduction was a speech from the President of the newly renamed Military-Affiliated Students of Stockton organization, Christian Simpon. This student touched on the past feeling of exclusivity in the military and how currently, he feels a sense of honor and community as a Stockton military student.
The next speech was from Dr. Michael Baranay, Director of the Military and Veteran Success Center. Dr. Baranay, who served in the military for four and a half years, explained that he felt lost after the army. He had no ambition to go back to school and did not know if there was anything more for him. He then came across an educational opportunity and described his passion for his current job. He explained how common it is for students to be in the dilemma of choosing between joining the army or continuing education—a concern that has been recognized, since there are now opportunities for students to take courses while being deployed. He emphasized that it is never too late to have that education. Following this statement, he highlighted his appreciation for the women who serve, then introduced Colonel Yvonne Mays to the podium.
Colonel Mays began her service as soon as she graduated high school. Despite that extreme life change, she did not give up on her education goals. She still received her full undergraduate college degree and worked for her master’s. She concluded her speech with a word of advice, stating, “There is more in you at this stage in life than I have ever dreamed.” She emphasized that there is still a struggle for inclusivity to this day, but overall each military participant “shares a single purpose and special bond.” The gathering ended with inviting the speakers and audience to a viewing reception of portraits of Stockton’s military community.
