On October 27, 2023, Stockton University presented a screening of the Rocky Horror Picture Show with a live shadow cast by Transylvanian Nipple Productions. Transylvanian Nipple Productions’ performance of The Rocky Horror Picture Show featured a local cast from Philadelphia that celebrated its 25th anniversary with Stockton students.
The Rocky Horror Picture Show is a 1975 cult classic film that follows straight-laced sweethearts Janet Weiss and Brad Majors, who take shelter in a mansion of peculiar extraterrestrials—led by the infamous Dr. Frank-N-Furter—after their car pops a tire during a storm. Over the course of the night, the characters experience a series of bizarre, sexual escapades, and witness Frank-N-Furter’s scientific exploits firsthand. The story, which has enthralled audiences for almost 50 years, is complete with an iconic soundtrack and dance numbers.
At the front door, audience members could buy prop bags that would allow them to participate in the show, complete with paper cards, confetti, and noise makers. Rocky Horror “Virgins”—audience members who were attending their first live shadow-cast performance—could choose to have a giant V painted in red lipstick on their foreheads. Several members came in costume.
Before the showing started, Transylvanian Nipple Productions warned audience members that the show would be offensive and explicit. They joked that if anyone wasn’t offended, they should come backstage to see them after the show. They also joked that people who had never seen the show before that night should “fuck off.”
Throughout the night, members from Transylvanian Nipple Productions would shout during the show making inappropriate jokes that made audience members laugh. Confetti was thrown, paper cards were thrown, and noisemakers were used when cued by the production members. Many people even got up and did the Time Warp dance. Transylvanian Nipple Productions’ Frank-N-Furter even came into the audience during his final solo number “I’m Going Home.”
After the show, Transylvanian Nipple Productions hosted a meet and greet for the audience to take photos to commemorate the night.
When Sarah Coe, a Stockton student, was asked about her experience, she responded, “As a Rocky Horror virgin, the actors were absolutely incredible, and it was a lot of fun!”
