On Thursday, September 21, 2023, Stockton University hosted the Glow-up Opportunity Fair for new and returning students to get familiar with career, internship, and personal development opportunities available on campus. Several offices and departments tabled at the fair to offer insight to students seeking for employment, internships, study abroad tours, and volunteer and student leadership opportunities.

Among those that tabled at the fair were the Murphy Writing Center, the Multicultural Center, Admission Ambassadors, TALONS, Sankofa, TogetHer, Center for Community Engagement, and Service Learning, among others.

Lauren Whaley and Alyssia Marshall, who represented the Center for Community Engagement and Service Learning, described the center as a platform for off-campus volunteer opportunities. They said that the center’s office is located in F-101 and that students can apply either online at stockton.edu/engagement or in person.

Peter Murphy, who is the Founder of the Murphy Writing Center, a Stockton alumnus, and an adjunct faculty member said that the Murphy Writing Center organizes writing conferences and workshops all through the year in the United States, Scotland, Wales, and Spain. He stated that the next conference is the Winter Poetry and Prose Getaway, which will mark the 30th anniversary of the conference and thirty scholarships will be awarded to people who intend to be a part of the conference. He emphasized that the deadline for applications for the scholarship is October 1 and people can stop by at the Noyes Museum and Art Garage for more information.

Sankofa, which is a mentorship program that offers a support system to men of color was represented by Nasir Terry, who stated that the organization will be having a party at the Multicultural Center on September 28. Sankofa’s sister organization, TogetHer, was equally represented by India Little, who described the organization as an organization for women of color to meet others within the community, noting that the organization has a lot of events annually like Curls Chella, a hairstyle event where women learn about textured hair and how to maintain it.

Finally, Saba Bhatti, a PREP Team Peer Educator, said that the Multicultural Center is home to Champions 4 Change, who promote diversity and inclusion and make sure the change that they started is long-lasting. The fair also featured students sharing experiences about how these programs had impacted them in one way or the other. There was a raffle draw at the end to win some merch.
