Women’s soccer triumphs in clean sweep against Centenary University

Written for The Argo by Sarah Cipkins

The Ospreys traveled to Hackettstown to play against the Cyclones at Centenary University on Wednesday, September 13 at 4 p.m. Within the first 10 minutes of the game, Emily Hauck (#16) crossed the ball that was sent back towards goal for Erica Dietz (#29) to score a goal off the thigh and into the back of the net.

At one point, the Ospreys had a chance to capitalize on a free kick outside of the 18-yard box. It was a low-driven ball, but the shot went away from goal. Continuing into the first half, Stockton’s midfield was able to connect passes and keep the ball in the Cyclone’s half, making it difficult for them to have possession of the ball. The Ospreys were eventually able to break the defense of the Centenary through many openings out wide. Soon after their domination with possession, Stockton was rewarded with another goal in the 24th minute. The goal was scored off a corner by Rylee Getter (#7) and the assist was from Katie Ambos (#3), giving Stockton the 2-0 lead against Centenary in the first half. Megan Brady, the Ospreys goalie (#99), was quiet in the first half. She did not have to make any saves.

At the start of the second half, it was clear that Stockton was not going to give up their lead over Centenary. Stockton was constantly getting the ball and keeping the pressure high. In the 56th minute, Erica Dietz scored again, putting the Ospreys 3 goals above Centenary. Dietz did a quick turn on a defender which opened up space for her to take a quick shot low into the left corner of the goal. Then, in the 63rd minute, Megan Morris (#15) scored her first career goal, making the score 4-0 Stockton. Morris passed two defenders and got to the ball before the goalie could slot it into the net. Towards the end of the second half, Centenary held the ball in Stockton’s half but couldn’t create any chances on goal. Brady had another quiet half and finished the game without having to make any saves.

Making Stockton’s scoring streak more grand, Carissa Goodwin (#6) scored off a long shot in the top right upper 90 of the goal to solidify the game in the 65th minute. This was Goodwin’s first career goal as well. The final whistle gave Stockton a dominating 5-0 win against Centenary University.

The Ospreys are on the road again traveling to Reading FC to play against Alvernia University on Saturday, September 16 at 7:30 p.m. They look to continue this winning streak into the rest of the season.
