Women’s soccer beats the heat in win against Drew Rangers

Written for The Argo by Sarah Cipkins

On Wednesday, September 6, the Ospreys competed against the Drew University Rangers at 5 p.m. at home. The ladies were able to handle the extremely hot weather conditions to pull through an impressive win over the Rangers.

The game started out slow as each team was trying to connect passes. It wasn’t until the 23rd minute when Erica Dietez (#29) scored the first goal to give Stockton the lead over Drew. Throughout the first half, goalie Megan Keil (#0) made two saves to keep Drew off the scoring board. The second half of the game ended in Stockton’s favor, with a calm header directed to the bottom left corner of the goal by ChiChi Wokocha (#26) in the 41st minute. Wokocha had an assist from Sophia Drea off the cross. Drew had chances to take it up the field but couldn’t capitalize on their efforts.

Halftime gave a much-needed opportunity for both teams to rehydrate and regroup. Already having a comfortable lead, Stockton added to that by scoring another three goals. Logan Shaw, in the 53rd minute, scored a long shot with her right foot from 40 yards out to make the score 3-0 to the Ospreys. Stockton dominated the second half by making passes around the Drew midfield and defense. With the constant running and chasing of the ball, the Rangers could not keep the same pace as the Ospreys. This led to two more goals scored by Stockton. Freshmen Katie Ambos (#3) scored in the 58th minute outside of the 18-yard box. Ambos also had an assist from Erica Dietz.

The last goal for the Ospreys, which gave them a commanding 5-0 lead, was scored by Kayla Rozanski (#8) with an assist from Logan Shaw in the 62nd minute. Rozanski fired it into the back of the net off of a Drew defender’s mistake to get rid of the ball. With four minutes left in the game, Drew was able to get their name on the score sheet with a goal from Kayla Kugler in the 85th minute. Kugler shot it with her right foot and hit the upper 90 of the goal.

The final score of the match was 5-1 in Stockton’s favor. Both teams battled hard and exerted an immense amount of energy due to the heat, but Stockton was able to rise above and come out on top.

Stockton’s women’s soccer team is currently in 3rd place, right below Rutgers Camden in the NJAC conference.
